A newly restored print of the 1956 film version of The King and I, generally considered to be one of the finest Hollywood adaptations of a Broadway musical, will be screened by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Monday, March 14. Presented as part of the Academy’s “Monday Nights with Oscar” series, the movie will be shown at 7:30 p.m. in the Academy Theater at Lighthouse International in Manhattan.

Yul Brynner and Deborah Kerr star in this film of the Richard Rodgers-Oscar Hammerstein musical based on the book Anna and the King of Siam, by Margaret Landon. Produced by Charles Brackett, The King and I earned five Academy Awards, for Actor (Brynner), Art Direction — Color (Lyle R. Wheeler, John DeCuir), Set Decoration (Walter M. Scott, Paul S. Fox), Costume Design — Color (Irene Sharaff), Music — Scoring of a Musical Picture (Alfred Newman, Ken Darby), and Sound Recording (20th Century Fox Studio Sound Department, Carl Faulkner, Sound Director). The film received additional nominations in the categories of Actress (Kerr), Cinematography — Color (Leon Shamroy), Direction (Walter Lang), and Best Picture.

Marni Nixon, who provided the singing voice for Deborah Kerr in The King and I, will attend the March 14 event and will speak just prior to the screening of the film. One of Hollywood’s most famous “ghost” vocalists, Nixon also sang for Kerr in An Affair to Remember, for Natalie Wood in West Side Story, and for Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady.

Tickets for the screening are priced at $5 for the general public, $3 for Academy members and students with a valid I.D. They may be reserved over the phone by calling 888-778-7575 or may be purchased at the theater on the night of the screening, pending availability. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. The Academy Theater at Lighthouse International is located at 111 East 59th Street (between Park and Lexington Avenues).
