Dracula, The Musical to Open on Broadway in August 2004

It has just been officially announced that Dracula, The Musical will open at the Belasco Theatre (111 West 44th Street, east of Broadway) on August 5, with previews set to begin on July 12. The show has a book by Christopher Hampton (Sunset Blvd., Les Liaisons Dangereuses), lyrics by Don Black (Sunset Blvd., Aspects of Love), and music by Frank Wildhorn (Jekyll & Hyde, The Scarlet Pimpernel, The Civil War).

Previously seen at the La Jolla Playhouse in 2001, the musical will be produced on Broadway by Dodger Stage Holding and Joop van den Ende in association with Clear Channel Entertainment. It will be directed by two-time Tony Award-winner Des McAnuff (Big River, The Who’s Tommy) and choreographed by Mindy Cooper. The design team includes Heidi Ettinger (sets), Catherine Zuber (costumes), and Howell Binkley (lighting). Constantine Kitsopoulos will serve as musical director. All of the above worked on the La Jolla production in the same capacities except Ettinger, who replaces John Arnone.

Based on the classic vampire novel by Bram Stoker, Dracula, The Musical is set in Europe at the end of the Victorian Age and concerns the title character’s lust for new blood. Casting and ticket information for the Broadway production will be announced soon.
