Karen McCullah Lutz, Kirsten "Kiwi" Smith Writing Screenplay for Updated Best Little Whorehouse in Texas Movie

Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith are working on a modern adaptation of The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, previously made into a movie musical in 1982, according to a report in Variety. A director and casting will be announced at a later date.

Lutz and Smith have written the screen plays for movies such as Legally Blonde, The Ugly Truth, The House Bunny, She’s the Man,Ella Enchanted, and 10 Things I Hate About You.

The musical focuses on a town sheriff and a madame who team up to stop a crusading TV evangelist from shutting down a local Texas whorehouse. On Broadway, Carlin Glynn and Henderson Forsythe played the leads. In the original film, the characters were played by Dolly Parton and Burt Reynolds.

Carol Hall wrote the songs heard in both versions of the musical. Parton wrote two additional numbers for the screen incarnation of the show. Which of the existing songs, if any, will be included in the new movie will also be announced at a future time.
