Elena Roger to Star in Michael Grandage’s Planned Broadway Revival of Evita

Elena Roger will star in the title role in a planned Broadway revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s Evita, according to a report by The New York Post. Michael Grandage will direct the production, which is aiming to arrive on Broadway during the 2011-2012 season at a theater to be announced. Rob Ashford will serve as the show’s choreographer.Further casting details will be announced at a later date.

The Argentine-born Roger played the role previously in the West End, in a production also directed by Grandage in 2006. She also appeared in the West End revival of Piaf and is scheduled to star in the Donmar Warehouse’s upcoming production of Pasion.

Evita, which tells the story of Argentina’s Eva Peron, premiered on Broadway in 1980, starring Patti LuPone in the title role and Mandy Patinkin as Che, both of whom won Tony Awards for their work. The production received an additional five Tonys, including Best Musical, Best Book, Best Score, and Best Direction,for Harold Prince.
