The Fly, a new opera based on David Cronenberg’s popular film adaptation of George Langelaan’s short story about a brilliant scientist who accidentally mutates into a hybrid of man and insect, will debut at the Théatre de Chatelet in Paris on July 1, 2008, and make its American premiere at the Los Angeles Opera on September 7, 2008.

The opera, to be directed by Cronenberg, will have a libretto by Tony Award-winning playwright David Henry Hwang and a score by Oscar-winning composer Howard Shore.
Placido Domingo will conduct the opera. Sets will be by Oscar winner Dante Ferretti and costumes will be by Denise Cronenberg, the director’s sister. No casting has been announced.

Hwang’s many plays include M. Butterfly, Golden Child, and Yellow Face, which will be seen at L.A.’s Mark Taper Forum in May. He wrote the books for the Broadway musicals Tarzan, Aida, and the revisal of Flower Drum Song and the librettos for such operas as The Voyage, The Silver River, and Ainadamar. Shore wrote the music for 11of Cronenberg’s films, including The Fly. His other film credits include The Aviator, The Departed, The Lord of the Rings, and Silence of the Lambs.
