For 20 Days, You Don't Have to Be Rich to Experience New York Theater

If you're a budget-conscious theater-goer – which may sound like an oxymoron considering today's average ticket prices -- it's time to hit the ATM. Off Broadway Alliance will be offering $20 tickets for 40 off-Broadway shows, in its 7th bi-annual promotion, 20at20. The deal applies to selected shows running between January 22 and February 10. Patrons simply show up to the box office 20 minutes before curtain with their $20 bill in hand. (Literally, because sales are cash only).

Some of New York's most popular shows are participating in the promotion: FORBIDDEN BROADWAY: Alive and Kicking!, SILENCE! The Musical, and NEWSical The Musical as well as the new off-Broadway revival of Bare: The Musical and the Tony Award-winning Broadway hit that returned to the off-Broadway stage, Avenue Q.

Chaired by Peter Breger, The Off Broadway Alliance (OBA) is a non-profit organization run by theater professionals. The 20at20 promotion was created to encourage the production of off-Broadway theater and to make it more accessible to new and diverse audiences. And by diverse, we mean normal people who can't spend half their week's pay on a two-hour date. [Call your love interest. Just don't tell him or her it was this cheap.]
