FCC Sets Deadline for Broadway Theaters to Vacate Airwaves Currently in Use for Wireless Microphones

The Federal Communications Commission has set a June 12 deadline for users of wireless microphone systems operating in the 700 megahertz frequency — including Broadway Theaters — to vacate these U.S. airwaves, according to a report in BusinessWeek.

The rights to the airwaves were won in a 2008 auction by AT&T and Verizon Wireless. Other organizations known to make use of these frequencies include schools, churches, and corporate boardrooms. BusinessWeek cites Thomas Ferrugia, a representative for the Broadway League, as stating that although the costs to replace existing wireless microphone systems can be upwards of $100,000, that the Broadway theaters will be able to comply with the changeover.
