Tony Administration Committee Makes Eligibility Rulings

By New York City
The Tony Awards Administration Committee met today for the second time this season to rule on the eligibility of Broadway productions and performers for the 2006 Tony Awards, presented by the League of American Theatres and Producers and the American Theatre Wing.

It was decided that Chita Rivera: The Dancer's Life will be considered in the Best Musical category; Latinologues will be considered in the Best Play category; Jessica Boevers and Christopher J. Hanke, who played the romantic leads in the short-lived show In My Life, will respectively be considered in the Leading Actress/Actor in a Musical categories; John Lloyd Young, who plays Frankie Valli in Jersey Boys, will be considered in the Leading Actor in a Musical category; Maria Friedman will be considered in the Leading Actress in a Musical category for her performance in The Woman in White; and LaChanze will be considered in the Leading Actress in a Musical category for her performance as Celie in The Color Purple. All other decisions were consistent with the various shows' opening night credits.

Previously, the committee met in September 2005 to consider shows that had opened between May and September. Further meetings will take place prior to the Tony nomination announcements, which are scheduled for Tuesday, May 16. This year's Tony Awards ceremony will be broadcast live from Radio City Music Hall on Sunday, June 11 by the CBS television network.
