It has just been announced that the Public Theater production of Caroline, or Change, the new musical with book and lyrics by Tony Kushner and music by Jeanine Tesori, will transfer to Broadway’s Eugene O’Neill Theatre this spring.

The show will be produced on Broadway by Carol Shorenstein Hayes and Jujamcyn Theatres (and others yet to be announced). It will begin previews on April 13 in advance of a May 2 opening. Caroline, or Change stars Tonya Pinkins, Veanne Cox, and Harrison Chad, and is directed by George C. Wolfe. The musical tells the story of the relationship between a Jewish child and his family’s black maid in 1963 New Orleans.

In his review of the Public Theater production, David Finkle described Caroline, or Change as “creative, exciting, and refreshingly original.” He also wrote that “Kushner’s libretto for the through-sung show exhibits the kind of social, political, and religious themes that one would expect the author of Angels in America to cover.”
