Mercedes Ruehl to Star in McCarter Theatre’s The How and The Why

Tony and Academy Award winner Mercedes Ruehl will star in Sarah Treem’s The How and The Why, to run January 7 – February 13 at the McCarter Theatre. Emily Mann will direct the production.

Treem’s two-character play examines what happens when, on the eve of a prestigious conference, an up-and-coming evolutionary biologist wrestles for the truth with an established leader in the field. The production will also feature Bess Rous.

Ruehl won Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for her performance in Lost in Yonkers. Among her many other stage credits are her Tony-nominated performances in The Goat, or Who is Sylvia? and The Shadow Box as well as The American Plan and The Rose Tattoo. She won an Academy Award for her performance in The Fisher King.
