Zac Efron has withdrawn from the planned remake of the film Footloose, according to published reports.

Efron, who starred as Troy Bolton in the High School Musical franchise and played Link Larkin in the film version of Hairspray, is reportedly looking to concentrate on non-musical projects. He will be seen next month in the comedy 17 Again with Matthew Perry.

Kevin Bacon starred in the original film of Footloose, about a city boy who comes to a small town where dancing is forbidden; it was subsequently developed into a Broadway musical. The new film is still on track to be produced.
