Terrence Howard, Tyler Perry, Phylicia Rashad, Anika Noni Rose, Denzel Washington, et al. Among NAACP Image Award Nominees

The nominations for the 42nd annual NAACP Image Awards have been announced, according to a report in Variety. The prizes will be presented in a ceremony to be held on Friday, March 4 at the Paley Center for Media in Beverly Hills and broadcast live on FOX.

The awards recognize excellence in film, television, music and literature categories. One of the most nominated movies is Tyler Perry’s For Colored Girls, which has been nominated for Best Motion Picture. Perry has also received a nomination for his direction of the film, and four of the actresses in the film: Anika Noni Rose, Kimberly Elise, Phylicia Rashad, and Whoopi Goldberg.

Among the other performers who have received NAACP Image Award nominations for their film work include Don Cheadle, Morgan Freeman, Samuel L. Jackson, Anthony Mackie, Denzel Washington, and Kerry Washington.

In the television categories, FOX’s Glee is one of the nominees in the Comedy Series category. In addition, the show has picked up a nomination for Amber Riley, in the Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series category.

Stage veterans who have been nominated for their work on television are theater veterans Andre Braugher, Giancarlo Esposito, Laurence Fishburne, Terrence Howard, Lucy Liu, S. Epatha Merkerson, Gugu Mgbatha-Raw, Sandra Oh, Rosie Perez, Sara Ramirez, Lamman Rucker, Anna Deavere Smith, Blair Underwood, Sofia Vergara, Vanessa Williams, Chandra Wilson, Darnell Williams, and Alfre Woodard.

In music categories, artists such as Dee Dee Bridgewater, Fantasia, Bobby McFerrin, and Usher are nominated as is The Wynton Marsalis Quintet.

In addition, playwright Pearl Cleage has received a nomination for her novel Till You Hear From Me.
