South Coast Rep Announces Lineup for 2011 Studio Series
South Coast Repertory has announced the lineup for its Studio Series, to be offered over the course of eight weekends, March 4 – June 19 in the company’s Nicholas Studio.
The series will begin with Steven Connell’s Against Oblivion (March 4-6), a solo show that combines hip-hop, stand-up comedy and spoken word performance to explore such issues as making ends meet in a difficult economy and surviving abuse. In addition, Sofia Alvarez’s Between Us Chickens will be offered, playing March 26 – April 3. The play centers on two small-town girls new to L.A.
The Studio Series will also include offerings from Aprana Dance Company, which will present Ganga..life as a river (March 11-13), a piece which layers post-modern choreography atop the classical Indian dance; Orange County Underground Burlesque Society, which will perform Variété Risqué (May 5-8); Breath of Fire Latina Theater Ensemble, which will present Janine Salinas’ Angel of the Desert (May 13-15), a new play about a teenager who has survived a civil war; and Backhausdance, which will perform Backhausedance: Re-imaginged (June 10-12), a quartet of modern-dance pieces.
South Coast Rep’s Studio Series will conclude with Rogue Artists Ensemble’s D Is for Dog (June 17-19), a play in which the world of 1950s sitcoms meets elements of science fiction and horror.
