The National Theatre, the Royal Court, Battersea Arts Centre (BAC), the Young Vic, Theatre Royal Stratford East, the Lyric Hammersmith, Somerset House and Sadler’s Wells will join together to create World Stages London, a series of theater events with an international flavor that will take place in May 2012, according to a report on the website for the U.K. magazine, The Stage.

Young Vic artistic director David Lan and arts consultant Nicola Thorold are overseeing the project, which is being created to coincide with the arrival of the Olympics in London that year.

The consortium of arts organizations will create approximately five works that they might not be able to create independently. Shows already being developed include Called Babel, which is based on the biblical story of the Tower of Babel, and a Bollywood-inspired musical, written by Tanika Gupta, that will debut at TRSE in 2011 prior to a run at Sadler’s Wells in 2012.
