Kenneth Branagh, Josh Hartnett, David Tennant, Jersey Boys Among Whatsonstage.com Winners

The Whatsonstage.com’s Theatregoers’ Choice Awards were presented at an awards ceremony and concert at the Prince of Wales Theatre tonight, hosted by Sheridan Smith and James Corden.

Jersey Boys won the Best New Musical award, with composer and original Four Seasons member Bob Gaudio accepting the award on behalf of the musical’s production team. The musical also won for set designer Klara Zieglerova, Lead Actor Ryan Molloy, who plays singer Frankie Valli, and Supporting Actor Stephen Ashfield, who plays Gaudio.

Meanwhile West Side Story was named Best Musical Revival, while star Sofia Escobar was named Best Lead Actress in a Musical.

Additional acting winners included Kenneth Branagh for Ivanov, Tom Hiddleston for his supporting roles in Ivanov and Othello, Katy Stephens for The Histories, Tracie Bennett for La Cage aux Folles, and Sophie Thompson for The Female of the Species. The cast of Into the Hoods won for Best Ensemble Performance.

Eddie Izzard won for Best Solo Performance for his stand-up show Stripped. Film star Josh Hartnett was named London Newcomer of the Year for his starring role in Rain Man. Daniel Boys won an award for Best Takeover in a Role for Avenue Q. David Tennant’s performance in Hamlet was named Theatrical Event of the Year, while the show won Best Regional Production.

Ray Davies accepted the award for Best Off-West End production for his musical Come Dancing. David Eldridge’s Under the Blue Sky beat out Tracy Letts’ August: Osage County for Best New Play, while Neil LaBute’s Fat Pig won an award for Best New Comedy. Michael Grandage won for Best Director for his production of Ivanov, and Michael Rippeth was named Best Lighting Designer for his work on Brief Encounter and Six Characters In Search of an Author.
