On the Waterfront to Begin West End Previews on January 28

A new stage adaptation of the Oscar-winning 1954 movie classic On the Waterfront will begin previews at the Theatre Royal Haymarket on January 28. The show is conceived and directed by Steven Berkoff, who will play Johnny Friendly, and co-written by the original screenplay’s author, Budd Schulberg, along with Stan Silverman.

The show is about ex-prize fighter turned longshoreman Terry Malloy (to be played by Simon Merrells), who comes up against his corrupt, Mob-ruled union bosses. After being implicated in a murder, Terry finds support in the form of a streetwise priest and the love of the dead man’s sister.

Berkoff’s many stage credits include Messiah, Shakespeare’s Villains, Salome, Decadence, Kvetch, The Secret Love Life of Ophelia, Requiem for Ground Zero and Sit and Shiver.
