South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center to Hold Grand Opening in October

The South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center, a brand-new $51 million state-of-the-art performing arts venue, will hold its grand opening celebration on October 1 & 2.

Performances at the opening celebration will span genres and cultures of south Miami-Dade and include jazz, classical, Latin, Caribbean and gospel music and dance, as well as theater and multimedia presentations created from interviews with community members.

Among the theater highlights of the Center’s inaugural season is The Asolo Repertory Theatre’s Hamlet Prince of Cuba (May 17-20), adapted from Shakespeare by Michael Donald Edwards, with Spanish translation by Eduardo Machado. Asolo Rep will also present Hamlet Redux on Friday, October 14.

In conjunction with Black History Month, the Center will present a special multimedia jazz and spoken word production based on the writings of Langston Hughes called “Ask Your Mama,” 12 Moods for Jazz (February 23), performed by the Ron McCurdy Quartet with a special guest narrator.

Dance highlights will include presentations from Garth Fagan Dance (November 5) and Evidence, A Dance Company (February 18).

Additional programming will include performances by Abraham.In.Motion, Brazz Dance Theater, James Cotton, Keb Mo, Christina Robinson, Nestor Torres, Turtle Island Quartet, and CeCe and Be Be Winans, among others.
