Lighting Designer Michael Philippi Dies at 58

Lighting designer Michael Philippi has died, according to a report in The Chicago Tribune. He was 58.

At the time of his death, Philippi was working on High Holidays by Alan Gross at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago. The company has canceled the first preview of the production, which was scheduled for Saturday, October 31.

Philippi’s work was seen on Broadway last season in Robert Falls’ production of Desire Under the Elms, which originated at the Goodman. The designer’s other Broadway credits include Death of a Salesman and The Speed of Darkness. He also designed Falls’ staging of King Lear, which was seen at the Goodman Theatre and at the Shakespeare Theatre in Washington D.C.
