LA Kids Spotlight: December '05
As it happens, almost all of this month's theatrical offerings qualify as family fare -- including the many and sundry versions of Dickens' immortal A Christmas Carol around the area, including South Coast Repertory's traditional adaptation; International City Theatre in Long Beach's imaginative circus version, and Celtic Arts Center's Irish-slanted version. If Dickens isn't your kid's thing, however, consider Los Angeles Clown Theatre's Emmitt Otter's Jugband Christmas (S. Marc Taper Foundation Amphitheatre, December 3, and Bob Baker's Holiday Spectacular (The Bob Baker Marionette Theatre, through January 15).
Philadelphia Kids Spotlight: December '05
No company in the city scored a bigger holiday hit last year than the Arden Theatre Company with their hugely successful production of A Year with Frog and Toad by Willie and Robert Reale -- so it's not a surprise to try to recreate that success with the world premiere of the Reales' The Dinosaur Musical (through January 22). Helmed by Frog and Toad director Whit MacLaughlin and starring Joshua Lamon (who grabbed a well-deserved Barrymore for his performance as the achingly slow Snail in Frog and Toad), the show concerns a prehistoric food shortage which causes the world's dinosaurs make a pact to no longer feast on each other for lunch. But the most carnivorous of the giants, the T-Rex, breaks the agreement, leaving it up to a group of peaceful dinosaurs to save the world.
Boston Kids Spotlight: December '05
Dueling Scrooges dominate local stages this month, scowling their way toward eleventh-hour enlightenment. The New Rep's production of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol (December 10-24), features local faves such as Leigh Barrett and Steve Barkhimer accompanying themselves (a la the new Sweeney Todd); the North Shore Music Theatre version, A Christmas Carol, A Musical Ghost Story (December 2-24), presents Broadway vet George Dvorsky in his 14th turn as the Ghost of Christmas Present; and in Trinity Rep's 29th annual A Christmas Carol, company stalwarts William Damkoehler and Timothy Crowe alternate as Scrooge in this double-cast production.
