Evan Rachel Wood, who was previously announced to play the part of Mary Jane Watson in the new Broadway musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, has dropped out of the show due to a scheduling conflict.

A statement released by the producers also notes that "Casting is underway to find a new 'Mary Jane' to join the rest of the cast in the production. Spider-Man will announce a new timeline shortly."

The show, to play the Hilton Theatre, was originally announced to open this season, but ran into financial difficulties as the show will reportedly cost nearly $50 million to produce. The musical is based on the Marvel Comics character, and follows the story of teenager Peter Parker, whose unremarkable life is turned upside-down -- literally -- when he's bitten by a genetically altered spider.

Tony Award winner Julie Taymor will direct the show, which will feature music and lyrics by Bono and The Edge of U2, and a book by Taymor and Glen Berger. As previously announced, rock singer Reeve Carney will play Peter Parker/Spider Man and Alan Cumming is set to play the Green Goblin.
