Ford’s Theatre presents Trying by Joanna McClelland Glass. Philadelphia patrician and champion of liberal causes Francis Biddle served as U.S. attorney general under Franklin Roosevelt, the first chair of the National Labor Relations Board, chair of the Americans for Democratic Action, solicitor general, and as a U.S. judge at the Nuremberg trials of Nazi war criminals following World War II. In the final year of his life and in deteriorating health, Biddle struggles to complete his memoirs and assess his legacy. In 1967, Sarah Schorr, a young woman from the prairie province of Saskatchewan, takes a job as Biddle’s secretary and tries to help him face those challenges with courage and dignity. Veteran actor James Whitmore returns to Ford’s portray Judge Biddle in the regional premiere of this beautiful and thoughtful production. Playwright Joanna McClelland Glass based the work on her real-life experience as Biddle’s secretary from 1967-1968. Theatre and film legend James Whitmore stars. Directed by Gus Kaikkonen.
