Elizabeth Lane writes about her wonderful Connecticut home with her husband and baby in a national housekeeping magazine. She describes her wonderful home, her decorating ideas and innovative recipes to her devoted readers. Her editor, Mr. Yardley, in a brilliant publicity move, decides to invite a war hero to Elizabeth’s home to experience a real, homespun Christmas.
The only problem is Elizabeth has been lying in her column. She’s actually a single woman living in an apartment in New York City, and her innovative recipes are actually provided by her Uncle Felix. When Mr. Yardley informs her of his idea, and his decision to come along as well, Elizabeth scrambles to save her job and reputation. She agrees to marry her friend John Sloan because he has a farm in Connecticut; she borrows a baby, and convinces Felix to cook for them. As long as Elizabeth can keep her guests from finding out the truth, everything will be fine.
