About This Show

The Abrons’ second Evolving Ear concert presents a varied and exciting evening of palindromic compositions for Renaissance lute, spectral song-writing investigations, and analog sythesizer experiments all grounded in far flung folk traditions and deep listening performance experiences. Dutch composer/lutenist Jozef Van Wissem very well may be the only lutenist working in the realm of contemporary experimental music. Cutting and pasting classical pieces, electronics, and processed field recordings, his unusual marriage of composition and improvisation creates an unheard of amalgam of contemporary folk and late Renaissance music. New York based songwriter Mike Wexler, a self-taught guitarist and singer, reconciles the demands of song structure to those of contemporary investigations into the nature of sound. And Brooklyn’s Che Chen (one half of the band True Primes) rounds out the evening with new pieces for analog synthesizer.
