The life story of Herculine Barbin — recorded in diaries that were rediscovered in the 1970s by Michel Foucault — provides the foundation for Kira Obolensky’s The Adventures of Herculina. Born in France in 1828, Herculine was raised in a convent school and suddenly redefined as a male after a doctor’s examination at age 18. From the boudoir of a bawdy British prostitute to a sideshow of freaks, the play raises questions of gender, sexuality, and above all love.
The Sunday November 19 performance is at 7pm.
