Steve Pistorius is a jazz pianist and bandleader from New Orleans who is passionate about early New Orleans jazz piano. His favorite style is that of one of the most important figures in the creation of jazz, pianist and composer Ferdinand Joseph Lamothe, better known as "Jelly Roll Morton." Steve operates on a fundamental belief that "the principles and boundaries of early jazz music should be adhered to, and that the music is relevant, fresh and alive when played with some degree of proficiency and lots of love."
Jelly Roll Morton (1890 – 1941) was an American pianist and songwriter best known for influencing the formation of modern day jazz during the 1920s. He cut his teeth as a youth and young man playing piano in New Orleans' bordellos. Blending the styles of ragtime and minstrelsy with dance rhythms, he was at the forefront of a movement that would soon be known as "jazz." An early innovator in the jazz genre, he rose to fame as the leader of Jelly Roll Morton's Red Hot Peppers band, whose most famous songs include "King Porter Stomp," "Black Bottom Stomp," and "Smoke House Blues," laying the foundation for the swing era. He is believed to have been the first jazz musician to put his arrangements to paper, with his "Original Jelly Roll Blues" the genre's first published work.
In honor of Jelly Roll Morton's birthday tonight, Steve presents one of his acclaimed Jelly Roll Tributes.
Steve Pistorius has the distinction of being one of the few living New Orleanians who specialize specifically in early jazz piano. Whether playing solo or leading a band, he creates joyful and swinging renditions of oft-neglected rags, waltzes, marches, pop tunes, blues and stomps. Love of the music turned into a lifetime profession in 1973, and Steve has since toured across the world playing with his own band and notable bandleaders such as Duke Heitger, John Gill, Michael White, Orange Kellin, Banu Gibson, Mark Braud, and Wendell Brunious. Career highlights include performing in Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, The Apollo Theatre, and the hit Off-Broadway musical One Mo’ Time with legendary New Orleans singer Topsy Chapman.
Currently, Steve plays several days a week on the historic Steamboat Natchez with Duke Heitger’s Steamboat Stompers, performs frequently at Preservation Hall with his Southern Syncopators, and with Dr. Michael White’s Original Liberty Jazz Band here at Snug Harbor, as well as many festival and tour dates.

In order to preserve the integrity, quiet and focus of our world class intimate concerts, only cocktails and soft drinks are available for table service inside the Music Room. However, we encourage you to arrive 90 Minutes prior to your showtime in order to enjoy full, relaxing dinner service in the Dining Room right next door, before getting seated in the Music Room for the show. 8pm ticket holders can also enjoy dinner, dessert or appetizers after the show, with Dining Room seating only guaranteed by submitting your table request before 8pm.
