The story begins when K. arrives at the village, believing he has been sent for by the Castle to perform a survey, though he has no physical proof and never once explains how he was sent. He quickly finds himself mired in bureaucracy and without any news of the surveying job. Most of the villagers he meets treat him with suspicion and disdain and are as cold as the heavy snow enveloping the village. The Castle is the tale of the perpetual immigrant striving and longing to fit into the status quo while never fully understanding what is expected of him within the constructs of the alien society he has been suddenly thrust into.
