About This Show

This Zoom presentation will honor the great Duke Ellington, composer and arranger Billy Strayhorn, and the Duke Ellington Orchestra. Marcus Shelby and guest artist vocalist Denise Perrier will share some of their favorite recordings, stories, knowledge about band members, and history about Duke Ellington between 1940-1960. This was one of his most prolific time periods which also included the famous Blanton Webster band during World War 2, “Black Brown, and Beige”, “Harlem Suite”, “Tattooed Bride”, “Jump for Joy”, several new suites, collaborations with Alvin Ailey, film scores, notable band members, and a revival at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1956 that rebirth his career. It’s also DE’s bday!

This April we are celebrating one year of producing monthly Zoom Presentations that center on the artist, history, and culture of Jazz. These presentations have become one of our most successful programs and an amplifier for our organization to a broader, international audience.
