This is Swinton’s first stage production in more than three decades.

Academy Award winner Tilda Swinton (Michael Clayton) will make her New York stage debut in Manfred Karge’s Man to Man at the Lucille Lortel Theatre beginning February 21, 2027. This eight-week engagement will open on February 28.
This revival of Man to Man, a play in which Swinton first starred in 1988, began at London’s Royal Court Theatre, where it opened September 5. Our critic at UK sibling publication WhatsOnStage said, “The energy and intensity she brings to this monologue is something else.”
This revival is directed by Stephen Unwin and designed by Bunny Christie (sets and costumes), Ben Ormerod (lighting), Elena Peña (sound), and Matt Powell (projections). Karge’s play is translated by Anthoyn Vivis. Erin Gioia Albrecht is Production Stage Manager.
Swinton plays the role she originated, Ella/Max, a woman in 1930s Germany who puts on her dead husband’s trousers and never takes them off.
Man to Man will have limited runs in Scotland at the Traverse Theatre and in Germany with the Berliner Ensemble ahead of arriving in New York.
