Founding artistic director James Houghton steps down later this year.
Paige Evans will succeed James Houghton as the artistic director of off-Broadway's Signature Theatre, effective July 1, 2016.
Evans currently serves as the artistic director of Lincoln Center Theater's LCT3, which she has led since the program's inception in 2008. With LCT3, Evans has developed and programmed works including Ayad Akhtar's Disgraced, Amy Herzog's 4000 Miles, and David Adjmi's Stunning, among many others.
Houghton served as founding artistic director of Signature Theatre since its inception 25 years ago. He announced his departure from the role in June 2015, and will serve until the end of June 2016. Houghton will continue his relationship with Signature in the role of Founder. "Paige Evans embodies all that we could possibly hope for in an artistic leader," he said in a statement. "She has spent the last twenty years dedicated to advancing the field and our writing community and has done so with tremendous integrity and determination. We're lucky to have her and I look forward to supporting Paige as she leads Signature into this next exciting phase."
Evans added, "I'm incredibly excited to be joining Signature Theatre. With great vision, Jim Houghton has created an exceptional home for playwrights, the theatrical community and audiences. I'm privileged to be working with Erika Mallin and Signature's Board of Trustees and staff on this next chapter."
