Ron Bohmer and Kerry O'Malley Set for Old Globe Production of October Sky
Casting is set for the West Coast premiere of the new musical October Sky. The show will run from September 10-October 23 under the direction of Rachel Rockwell at San Diego's Old Globe Theatre.
Inspired by the 1999 film from Universal Pictures and the book Rocket Boys by Homer H. Hickam Jr., the musical tells the story of a West Virginia high school student who enters a rocketry competition against the wishes of his domineering, practical-minded dad. With the help of his friends and the local community, he just might light up the night. The musical features a book by Brian Hill and Aaron Thielen and a score by Michael Mahler.
The production will star Kyle Selig, Ron Bohmer, Kerry O’Malley, Rebecca Bellingham, Joel Blum, Will Branner, James Royce Edwards, Steve Gouveia, Austyn Myers, Destan Owens, Eliza Palasz, Liam Quealy, Patrick Rooney, Connor Russell, Lance Arthur Smith, Betsy Stewart, Nick Sullivan, John Cardoza, Clay Stefanki, Scott Wakefield, and Angela Wildflower. Further casting will be announced shortly.
The design team comprises Kevin Depinet (scenic design), Linda Cho (costume design), Japhy Weideman (lighting design), Garth Helm (sound design), Shawn Sagady (projection design), Charlie Alterman (music director), Bruce Coughlin (orchestrations), Courtney Cerny (assistant director and associate choreographer).
Rockwell will also serve as choreographer for the production, which was first produced in 2015 at the Marriott Theatre. Because of a scheduling conflict, Marsha Norman, previously announced to join the creative team, has instead served as a creative consultant to the Old Globe production.
