Tony Award-winners Christine Ebersole and Judith Ivey will (respectively) portray Mary, Queen of Scots and Elizabeth I in a reading of Enid Rudd’s new play Dearest Cousin at the Lion Theatre on May 28 at 3pm. The reading is by invitation only, but a full New York production of the play is planned for the 2003-2004 season.
Dearest Cousin tells the story of Mary, Queen of Scots. On the eve of her execution, Mary is visited by Elizabeth I, who has a plan to save her life. The play traces the conflict between the two women. Leonard Peters will direct the May 28 reading.
Ebersole received a Tony for her performance in the revival of 42nd Street and is nominated this season for her work in Lincoln Center Theater’s Dinner at Eight. She is currently appearing Off-Broadway in Talking Heads. Ivey won Tonys for her performances in Steaming and Hurlyburly and was nominated for her role in Park Your Car in Harvard Yard. She recently appeared Off-Broadway in The Women of Lockerbie.
