Soul Train, the beloved variety television series, is heading to Broadway.

Matthew Weaver, producer of the long-running musical Rock of Ages, has acquired the theatrical rights to the series from Soul Train Holdings, LLC., and is in talks with theater and film notables to come aboard as members of a Broadway creative team.

Created in 1970 by Don Cornelius, Soul Train introduced the world to new music and dance moves on a weekly basis. Featuring performances by R&B, pop, soul, hip-hop, gospel, and disco artists, the show ran from 1971 to 2006, becoming the longest-running nationally syndicated music program in television history.

"Don Cornelius created a television show that became a cornerstone in American culture and I am excited and honored to be bringing it to the stage," Weaver said in a statement. "We are putting together a top-notch team of artists to ensure Soul Train is the hippest trip on Broadway. We want to thrill the audiences who loved the TV show and introduce the incredible music and style of Soul Train to a new generation."

No timeline for the production has been announced.
