Playwright Rajiv Joseph has won a 2009 Whiting Writers’ Award, according to a report in The New York Times. The awards, which come with a cash prize of $50,000, are given annually to poets, fiction and nonfiction writers, and playwrights “of exceptional talent and promise in early career.”

Joseph received the sole award for playwriting. His plays include All This Intimacy and the Lucille Lortel Award nominated Animals Out Of Paper as well as Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo, which was seen earlier this year at the Kirk Douglas Theatre and which will be produced next spring at the Mark Taper Forum.
