Paper Bag Players Co-Founder Judith Martin Has Died

Judith Martin, founder and long-time artistic director of children’s theater company the Paper Bag Players, died on July 28 at the age of 93 in Mineola, N.Y.

Born and raised in Newark, New Jersey, Martin co-founded the Paper Bag Players along with Shirley Kaplin, Sudie Bond, and Remy Charlip in 1958 and went on to serve as the company’s artistic director for 51 years. She created and performed in over 35 shows, working with theater artists such as Irving Burton, Betty Osgood, Doug Norwich, and Jan Maxwell.

In addition, Martin helped run the dance project of the National Youth Administration
and performed with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company.

She is survived by her daughter and two grandchildren.
