The Los Angeles theater community will raise its annual toast to itself on Sunday, November 25, when the 2002 Theatre L.A. Ovation Awards are held at the newly restored Orpheum Theatre, 842 South Broadway.

The Ovation Awards, initiated in 1989, are peer-judged, competitive theater honors administered by TLA, a non-profit organization set up to represent and support the theater business in Movietown. This year, 350 stage productions were submitted for consideration; to be in the running, a show must be registered with Equity and have at least 12 performances.

The Orpheum, a 2,000 seat playhouse, was built in 1926. Along with places like the Palace, the Rialto, and the Million Dollar Theatre, it was part of downtown L.A.’s storied theater district (between Third and Ninth streets, on Broadway), said to have been the first and largest theater district in the country.
