Adam Bernstein, an off-Broadway veteran who helped lead Signature Theatre's efforts to plan and manage its $70 million capital budget, will become the new executive director of The New Group, the organization announced today. Bernstein takes the post on February 24 and succeeds Geoff Rich, who has departed in order to focus on his radio production business.

"We have found in Adam the perfect Executive Director to meet the challenge of taking The New Group into the next exciting phase of our development," New Group Artistic Director Scott Elliott said in a statement.

Bernstein spent 11 years with Signature Theatre and became its general manager in 2006. He helped transition the company from its former home at the Peter Jay Sharp Space to its new digs at The Pershing Square Signature Center, and he produced the theater's first international tour to China's Wuzhen Theatre Festival. As a general manager, he worked on Signature's acclaimed productions of The Orphans' Home Cycle, Old Hats, Angels in America, The Lady From Dubuque, and The Piano Lesson, among many others. He had previously served as general manager of the Blue Heron Arts Center and was the founding artistic director of Confluence Theatre Company.

The New Group is currently presenting Thomas Bradshaw's dark comedy, Intimacy, at the Acorn Theater at Theater Row. Later this year, it will stage Sharr White's drama Annapurna, starring Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman.
