Jimmy Smits will headline NBC’s untitled Stephen Gaghan drama pilot set in the world of crime, law enforcement and politics in sprawling modern-day Los Angeles, according to Deadline.com.

Smits will play Los Angeles Mayor Alfonso Morales in the series. Stage veteran Noah Emmeirich will play Special Investigations Unit detective Terry Mullins; Emma Dummot will play Terry’s 15-year-old daughter Jennifer; and Madchen Amick will play Terry’s ex-wife, Mary McCarthy, a high-powered attorney.

In other casting news, Deadline reports that stage and screen star Donald Sutherland will co-star in NBC’s My Life As an Experiment. He will play the father-in-law of Paget Brewster’s character, Stacie.

Christina Applegate, who received a Tony Award nomination for her performance in Sweet Charity, will star in an as-yet-untitled comedy pilot for NBC, which will be an irreverent look at parenthood from the standpoint of a career woman who never thought she’d be a mother.

Boris Kodjoe, who played Brick in the Broadway revival of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, has joined the ensemble cast of ABC’s political drama, Georgetown.

Tom Everett Scott, seen on Broadway in The Little Dog Laughed, has also been cast in a pilot: he will play the male lead opposite Jenna Elfman in ABC’s comedy Bad Mom, which centers on Julia (Elfman), a woman whose two kids have been raised largely by her own mother (to be played, as previously reported, by Frances Conroy), but when the older woman decides she wants her own life back, her daughter finds herself raising the kids herself. Scott will play Julia’s husband who is working for a very demanding new boss and is often forced to do overtime.

Additional casting has also been announced for the FOX pilot I Hate My Teenage Daughter. Stage veterans Kevin Rahm and Chad Coleman have joined this show, which, as previously announced will star Katie Finneran.
