Jimmy Brewer, Samantha Massell to Lead Starry The Flamingo Kid at Hartford Stage

Jimmy Brewer (The Black Suits) and Samantha Massell (Fiddler on the Roof) will head the cast of the new musical The Flamingo Kid, which will premiere at Hartford Stage May 9-June 9.

Based on the 1984 Garry Marshall film, The Flamingo Kid features a book and lyrics by Robert L. Freedman (A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder) and score by Scott Frankel (War Paint). It will be directed by Darko Tresnjak, the outgoing Hartford Stage artistic director.

Brewer will take on the role of Jeffrey Winnick, a Brooklyn teenager who gets a job as a cabana boy at a private club on Long Island, with Massell as Carla, the woman of his dreams. They're joined by Adam Heller and Liz Larsen as Arthur and Ruth, Jeffrey's parents; and Marc Kudisch and Lesli Margherita as Phil and Phyllis Brody, Carla's affluent aunt and uncle. The principal company also includes Lindsey Brett Carothers as Joyce, Ben Fankhauser as Steve, and Alex Wyse as Hawk.

Featured in the ensemble are Ben Bogen, Michael Hartung, Jean Kauffman, Ken Krugman, Omar Lopez-Cepero, Anna Noble, Erin Leigh Peck, Steve Routman, William Squier, Kathy Voytko, Price Waldman, Kelli Youngman, Stuart Zagnit, Gregory Rodriguez, Taylor Lloyd, and Jayke Workman.

The creative team includes choreographer Denis Jones, set designer Alexander Dodge, costume designer Linda Cho, lighting designer Philip Rosenberg, sound designer Peter Hylenski, projection designer Aaron Rhyne, music director Thomas Murray, orchestrator Bruce Coughlin, hair designer Charles G. LaPointe, makeup designer Joya Giambrone, and fight choreographer Thomas Schall.
