Boston's 33rd annual Elliot Norton Awards ceremony will be held on Monday, May 11, at Boston's Citi Shubert Theatre. Actress and comedian Lea DeLaria will be this year's guest of honor at the ceremony, which will feature nominated musical performances as well as additional surprise appearances.

The awards are presented annually by the Boston Theater Critics Association (BTCA) to honor the outstanding productions, directors, designers, and performers that audiences have seen on Greater Boston area stages throughout the year.

In announcing the Elliot Norton honoree, Joyce Kulhawik, president of the BTCA, said, "Lea DeLaria’s cutting-edge talent in so many formats, as a comedian, singer, writer, director, actress on TV, film, and stage — from Broadway’s On the Town and the American Rep Theater’s Prometheus Bound in Cambridge, to her summer performances in Provincetown — are a testament to her versatility and outspokenness. Her critically acclaimed role as "Big Boo" in Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black, her recent impromptu performance speaking truth to ignorance on a NYC subway, while hot off a jazz gig that raised the roof at Lincoln Center, have left us dazzled. It is an honor to honor her!"

Past recipients of the Boston theater accolade include Olympia Dukakis, Chita Rivera, Tommy Tune, Al Pacino, Edward Albee, Brian Dennehy, August Wilson, Julie Harris, Sir Ian McKellen, Lynn Redgrave, and Jason Robards.
