Two-time Tony Award winner Bernadette Peters will receive the Arlington, Virginia-based Signature Theatre‘s 2011 Stephen Sondheim Award, according to a post from the theater’s Twitter feed. The award, established in honor of America’s most influential contemporary musical theater writer and composer, will be presented at a black-tie gala dinner next April.

Peters is currently starring in the Broadway revival of Sondheim’s A Little Night Music and, as previously reported, will be playing Sally Durant Plummer in the Kennedy Center’s production of the composer/lyricist’s Follies next May. That production will be directed by Signature’s artistic director Eric Shaffer.

The actress has also been seen in the original companies of Sondheim’s Sunday in the Park With George and Into the Woods in addition to starring in the 2003 Broadway revival of Gypsy, which has lyrics by Sondheim and music by Jule Styne. She has won two Tony Awards: for her performances in Song and Dance and Annie Get Your Gun.
