The Christians begins performances tonight at Theater J.

Set in a large contemporary Christian church and featuring a live choir, The Christians follows Pastor Paul as he delivers a sermon with the potential to shake the very foundation of the church he's spent 20 years building. Gregg Henry directs Lucas Hnath's script.

The cast features Caroline Clay (Doubt), Annie Grier (Tribes), Michael Russotto (The Sisters Rosensweig), Justin Weaks (Lobby Hero), and Michael Willis (Sons of the Prophet). Local choirs joining the cast include All Souls Church Unitarian Jubilee Singers, National Broadway Chorus, DMV Youth Gospel Choir, Jubilee Majestic Concert Choir, Michigan Park Christian Church Mass Choir, and Bowie State Gospel Choir.

"Nothing could be more fitting than presenting The Christians at Theater J, the nation’s premier Jewish Theater company," said Theater J artistic director Adam Immerwahr. "The Christians is an urgent and searing play about religion’s awesome power to unite us, or divide us. It’s a play about community, about faith, about America. It’s one of the most vital plays written in the last five years."

The creative team comprises Jonathan Dahm Robertson (set and projection design), Kyle Grant (lighting design), Danielle Preston (costume design), Patrick Calhoun (sound design), Kevin Laughon (properties design), and Markus Williams (music consultant).

Performances run through December 11.
