The Lavender Footlights Festival will present Douglas Carter Beane with its inaugural Ovation Award, which recognizes individuals whose work has contributed to the development of queer theatre arts. The festival will take place at the Miami Science Museum place on May 31 and June 1.

Beane received a Tony Award nomination this morning for Best Book of a Musical for Xanadu. He is also the author of The Little Dog Laughed, Dancing in the Dark, Music From A Sparkling Planet, The Country Club, and As Bees in Honey Drown.

On Sunday, June 1st at 6pm, theater critic Christine Dolen, of the Miami Herald, will lead a “Conversation with Douglas Carter Beane” which will navigate through Beane’s body of work, and feature live excerpts from select plays in Beane’s canon. The program will culminate with the presentation of the Ovation Award to the playwright, followed by a reception with the artist in attendance. The festival will close with a reading of the first act of Beane’s newest play, The Nance, to be directed by Lavender Footlights’ Artistic Director Ryan Capiro.
