Bill Camp, Tovah Feldshuh, Tonye Patano, Duncan Sheik et al. Receive San Diego Theatre Critics Circle Awards

Winners have been announced for San Diego Theatre Critics Circle’s 2010 Craig Noel Awards for Theatrical Excellence. The awards were presented in a ceremony held on January 10 at the Museum of Contemporary Arts, San Diego, in La Jolla.

Top honors went to the La Jolla Playhouse production of Ruined (co-produced with Berkeley Repertory Theatre and Huntington Theatre Co.), which won for Outstanding Dramatic Production, Direction (Liesl Tommy), Lead Performance, Female (Tonye Patano), Featured Performance, Female (Zainab Jah), Ensemble, Set Design (Clint Ramos), and Sound Design (Broken Chord).

Duncan Sheik won the award for his score to Whisper House at the Old Globe, while the Outstanding New Musical award was given to Limelight: The Story of Charlie Chaplin, presented by La Jolla Playhouse. Casey Nicholaw’s choreography for Robin and the 7 Hoods at the Old Globe tied with Javier Velasco’s for Hairspray at San Diego Rep.

Steve Gunderson won for his performance in Hairspray, and also received a special award as Actor of the Year. Acting winners also included Miles Anderson (The Madness of George III ), Bill Camp (Notes From Underground), Tovah Feldshuh (Golda’s Balcony), Rob McClure (Limelight), Deborah Gilmour Smyth (Sweeney Todd), Jay Whittaker (Old Globe Shakespeare Festival body of work), Shana Wride (Private Lives), and Joy Yandell (Mixtape). Victoria Matthews was recognized as Outstanding Young Artist for Hairspray, and the ensemble of Ion Theatre’s Hurlyburly was also honored.
