 | Melvin Van Peebles in Unmitigated Truth
(© Charles Rogers) | Emmy Award winner and four-time Tony Award nominee Melvin Van Peebles' new work, Unmitigated Truth: Life, a Lavatory, Loves and Ladies, has extended its run at the Algonquin Theater's Parker Theater. There will be a performance tonight, July 1 at 6pm, with performances resuming on July 12, and continuing throughout July, and possibly into August.
The piece candidly recounts the memories of a life (almost) well lived through song. It will also feature music director and guitarist William "Spaceman" Patterson and vocalist Carmen Barika.
Van Peebles has worked as an actor, producer, writer and director. He received Tony Nominations for book, music and lyrics of the 1972 musical Ain't Supposed to Die a Natural Death, and garnered another nod for best book of Don't Play Us Cheap in 1973. He received a 1987 Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Writing of a Children's Special. Van Peebles is recognized as one of the most influential people in the history of cinema for his commercialization of both Independent and Black films, including his blockbuster movie Sweet Sweetbacks Baaadasss Song. His latest film Confessions of a Ex-Doofus-ItchyFooted Mutha, based on his own graphic novel of the same name, will premiere August 21, 2009.
