A new Off-Broadway production of Jonathan Larson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning musical Rent will begin an open-ended run at New World Stage on July 14. It will open officially on August 11 and will be directed by Michael Greif, who helmed the show’s original production. Kevin McCollum and Jeffrey Seller and Allen S. Gordon will be the producers.

Casting for this production begins immediately with open calls in New York on Friday, March 18, 11am – 2pm, at New World Stages, and in Los Angeles on Wednesday, March 30, 1:30pm – 4:00pm at the Hollywood United Methodist Church, 6817 Franklin Avenue.

The creative team will include choreographer Larry Keigwin; music supervisor Tim Weil; set designer Mark Wendland; costume designer Angela Wendt; lighting designer Kevin Adams; and sound designer Brian Ronan.

An update on La Boheme, Rent opened at New York Theatre Workshop in 1996 and moved to Broadway later that spring, where it earned four Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and Best Book and Best Score for Larson, who died suddenly of an aneurysm earlier that year. The show closed in September 2008 after a run of more than 5100 performances.

A film version was released in 2005 and a national tour, featuring original leads Anthony Rapp and Adam Pascal, ran in 2009 and 2010.
