October 21, 2009

Film producer Paula Wagner has secured the film rights to Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schoenberg’s musical Miss Saigon and is in the process of assembling a team to create a film version of the musical, according to a report in Variety. The film will be produced by Wagner’s newly formed company Chestnut Ridge Productions along with Cameron Mackintosh.

The trade paper also reports that Lee Daniels has been approached about directing the movie. No casting has been announced.

Miss Saigon tells the tragic love story of a Vietnamese bar girl and an American soldier before the fall of Saigon in 1975. The show opened on the West End in 1989 and played on Broadway for nearly 10 years. The original production starred Jonathan Pryce and Lea Salonga.

As previously reported, Wagner is separately developing a stage musical about the rise of hip-hop pioneers Run-DMC.
