Works by Romulus Linney, Steven Sater, Duncan Sheik, David Zellnik et al. Set for E.S.T.’s 2011 Marathon of One-Act Plays

Ensemble Studio Theatre has announced the plays that will be presented as part of the 2011 Marathon of One-Act Plays, to be offered in two parts, May 23 – June 25.

Series A of the Marathon, running May 20 – June 18, will consist of Romulus Linney’s Tennessee, a look at the mystery of an old woman’s life, to be directed by Harris Yulin; Qui Nguyen’s Bike Wreck, a portrait of a Chinese food delivery man, to be directed by John Gould Rubin; Billy Aronson’s In the Middle of the Night, which centers on an encounter between a college freshman and a wild girl; J. Holtham’s School Night, about two estranged brothers’ reunion, to be directed by Abigail Zealey Bess; and Ben Rosenthal’s Ten High, in which a murder plot and a marriage unravel and interwine in a bar on one evening, to be directed by John Giampietro.

The creative team for Series A of the Marathon will include Jason Simms (scenic design), Geoffrey Dunbar (lighting design), and Rachel Dozier-Ezell (costume design).

Series B, which will run June 4-25, will feature Jose Zayas’ staging of Mrs. Jones and the Man from Dixieland, about an encounter between a young mother and a stranger, by Steve Sater and Duncan Sheik and featuring a new song from the long-time collaborators. The series will also include Jacquelyn Reingold’s I Know, which centers on two actors also long-term partners, to be directed by Dan Bonnell; David Zellnik’s For Elise; about two very different people’s reaction to a Hassidic wedding reception, to be directed by Pamela Berlin; Michael Louis Wells’ Two from the Line, in which two men get too personal while watching a basketball game on TV, to be directed by R.J. Tolan; and Cassandra Medley’s Cell, in which a woman rescues her younger sister and adult niece form homelessness, to be directed by Jamie Richards.

The creative team for this set of one-acts will be comprised of Jason Simms (scenic design), Greg MacPherson (lighting design), Benjamin Furiga (sound design), and Erica Evans (costume design).
