2010-2011 Outer Critics Circle Award Winners Announced

The winners of the 2010-2011 Outer Critics Circle Awards have been announced. The awards will be presented in a ceremony to be held at Sardi’s on May 26.

The Book of Mormon has won four awards, including Outstanding New Broadway Musical and Outstanding New Score. In addition, Casey Nicholaw and Trey Parker have won the award as Outstanding Director of Musical, and Josh Gad has received the award for Outstanding Actor in a Musical.

War Horse has also received four prizes, including the previously announced Special Achievement Award for Puppet Design, Fabrication and Direction. In addition, it has been been named Outstanding New Broadway Play and Marianne Elliott and Tom Murphy have won the Outstanding Director of a Play award.

A third show, Roundabout Theatre Company’s Anything Goes has also received a quartet of prizes, including Outstanding Revival of a Musical, as well as awards for Kathleen Marshall (Outstanding Choreography), Sutton Foster (Outstanding Actress in a Musical) and Adam Godley (Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical).

In other musical categories, Laura Benanti has won the Outstanding Featured Actress in a Musical prize for Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, and The Kid has been named Outstanding New Off-Broadway Musical.

In non-musical categories, Nina Arianda of Born Yesterday and Frances McDormand of Good People have tied for Best Lead Actress in a Play. Mark Rylance has received the Best Lead Actor in a Play award, and Brian Bedford and Elizabeth Rodriquez have won, respectively, in featured actor and actress categories. The Normal Heart has received the prize for Outstanding Revival of a Play and Ellen Barkin, as previously reported, has received a non-competitive award for Outstanding Broadway Debut for her work in the show. In addition, Other Desert Cities has won as Outstanding New Off-Broadway Play and the John Gassner Award has been given to Mattthew Lopez for The Whipping Man.
