Billy Elliot Leads 2009 Tony Award Nominations

The 2009 Tony Award nominations were announced this morning by Cynthia Nixon and Lin-Manuel Miranda. They will be presented at the 2009 Tony Awards on Sunday, June 7 at Radio City Music Hall and aired live on CBS-TV. The 2009 Tony Awards are presented by The Broadway League and The American Theatre Wing.

Billy Elliot, the Musical led the field with 15 nominations, including Best Musical. Other shows with multiple nominations include Next to Normal (11), Hair (8), Shrek the Musical (8), Mary Stuart (7), The Norman Conquests (7), God of Carnage (6), and Joe Turner’s Come and Gone (6).

This year’s nominating committee consists of Joe Benincasa, Robert Callely, Ben Cameron, Thomas Cott, Jacqueline Z. Davis, John Dias, Michael D. Dinwiddie, Sue Frost, Elena K. Holy, Betty Jacobs, Michael Kantor, Robert Kimball, Howard Marren, Laurence Maslon, Jon Nakagawa, Phyllis Newman, Alice Playten, Theresa Rebeck, Roger Rees, Steven Suskin, Tamara Tunie, Willian Tynan, Tom Viola, Kimberlee Wertz, Doug Wright, and Andrew Zerman.
