Follies, Newsies, Once Among 55th Annual Grammy Nominees

Recording Academy also gives nominations to The Gerswhins’ Porgy and Bess and Nice Work If You Can Get It in Best Musical Theatre Album category.

Will Stephen Sondheim’s beloved musical Follies, which won the Grammy Award in 1987 for its famed Lincoln Center concert, take home a second trophy, or will Broadway’s Once, which received the 2012 Tony Award for Best Musical, emerge as the winner at the 55th Annual Grammy Awards?

Nominations have been announced for the Recording Academy’s annual honors for the best in music, which will be presented at 8pm on February 10 in Los Angeles and aired live on CBS.

Five Original Broadway Cast recordings have been nominated in the category of Best Musical Theatre Album:

Follies, featuring Danny Burstein, Jan Maxwell, Tony Award winner Bernadette Peters, and Ron Raines as principal soloists.

The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess, featuring Tony Award winner Audra McDonald, Norm Lewis, and David Alan Grier as principal soloists.

Newsies, featuring Jeremy Jordan and Kara Lindsay as principal soloists.

Nice Work If You Can Get It, featuring Tony Award winner Matthew Broderick and Kelli O’Hara as principal soloists.

Once, featuring Tony Award winner Steve Kazee and Cristin Miloti as principal soloists.

In addition, Tony Award winners Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (Hairspray) are nominated in the category of Best Song Written for Visual Media for “Let Me Be Your Star” from the NBC series Smash.

Theater veterans nominated in the category of Best Comedy Album include Lewis Black (In God We Rust), Margaret Cho (Cho Dependent: Live In Concert); Kathy Griffin (Kathy Griffin: Seaman 1st Class), and Jim Gaffigan (Mr. Universe).

Former Chicago star Ute Lemper is nominated in the category of Best Classical Vocal Solo for Paris Days, Berlin Nights, while rock superstars U2, featuring Spider-Man Turn off the Dark songwriters Bono and the Edge, are nominated in the category of Best Long Form Video for From the Sky Down.
